SUMMARY:
The Youth Program Mentor is responsible for supervision and coordination of work experience, training, activities and events for youth participants. Provide and encourage the development of good work ethics, moral, and teamwork among participants. Develop, coordinate and facilitate after-school and summer programs designed to help youth participants gain the skills and knowledge to prepare them for the challenges they will face as adults.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Associates Degree in human or social services and two (2) years of experience working with youth are required;
OR
• High school diploma or GED equivalent and five (5) years of experience working with youth are required.
• Minimum of one year of supervisory experience is required.
• Three (3) years of experience working in a Native American community.
• Knowledge of Native American cultures, traditions, history, and needs.
• Ability to mentor youth participants through positive work experiences, trainings and events.
• Must have working knowledge of basic hand tools, light equipment and other materials to complete outdoor job assignments.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with working conditions.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills required.
• Must be able to pass a state and federal background check.
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must have current valid driver’s license.
• Must have reliable personal transportation.
• Must have proof of current insurance coverage.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and background check.
• This positions is grant funded and is dependent upon the continued funding of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s P.L 102-477 grants program.
• Background investigation required that shows no theft or fraud above a misdemeanor, no felony drug conviction and no sexual or crimes-against-a-person conviction at any level.
• A staff person with direct contact with or access to children in care must disclose the arrest, conviction, and applicant background information if that staff person:
(a) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed:

  1. a crime against a child;
  2. an act of physical or sexual abuse;
  3. neglect;
  4. a felony;
  5. the same or similar crimes as those in this subsection listed in the laws of another state or of the United States or of any Tribal law;
    (b) has a conviction of, has admitted to, has an adjudication of delinquency for, has been charged and is awaiting trial for, or a preponderance of the evidence indicates the person has committed any misdemeanor offense under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children. The Licensing Committee may evaluate the nature and time of a misdemeanor assault charge as well as other types of misdemeanor crimes not specified in this section to determine whether employment is appropriate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Monitor participants’ progress by maintaining continuous communication with each participant by phone, email or face to face appointments.
• Manage and prepare weekly schedule and ensure timesheets are processed in a timely manner.
• Ensure that worksite supervisors are providing feedback for each participant.
• Must be able to work outdoors and find alternative places of work when weather is not permitting.
• Submit reports by collecting and summarizing information using case notes, data reports and collaboration meetings.
• Work with participants requesting assistance in education, academic or social issues.
• Assist in developing established goals for participants and ensure the programs offered meet their goals during each year’s activities. Goals may include financial literacy, job-readiness skills, basic communication skills, academic assistance and tutoring.
• Ensure the intake process of clients are accurately documented in the AanjiBimaadizing database.
• Manage each assigned clients’ case and make modifications to clients’ employability development plan as needed to ensure clients’ needs are being met in achieving their goals.
• Supervise youth at locations where youth program activities are being held.
• Implement program goals through appropriate curriculum and activities.
• Attend all scheduled staff meeting within AanjiBimaadizing.
• Develop and maintain a positive corresponding relationship with schools within the service areas to monitor the progress of youth clients.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Hours may vary depending on departmental needs and may include evenings and weekends.
• Moderate stress level involved with little threat.
• Work may include both in and outdoors areas.
• Local travel is required; out of state travel may be necessary.
