SALARY RANGE: $59,000 - $84,000

SUMMARY:
The Paralegal assists the Band Member Legal Services office with research of criminal and civil law and legal precedents, investigation of facts, and the preparation of legal documents. Additionally, the Paralegal serves as the Office Manager and supervises other administrative staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies
• Three to five years of experience in the field or a related area
• One to two years of supervisory experience
• Knowledge of commonly used legal concepts, terminology, and procedures within a particular field
• Knowledge of legal principles, practices, laws, regulations, and rule relating to the Band
• Knowledge of legal filing requirements and corresponding systems
• Ability to perform legal research on commonly used legal search engines
• Ability to maintain, revise, and update the schedules of legal staff
• Ability to interpret and apply laws, and to communicate effectively
• Ability to draft legal documents with minimal oversight, including pleadings, motions, memoranda, and affidavits
• Strong attention to detail
• Must have driver’s license
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy
• Must pass a background check
• Must pass a Pre-employment drug & alcohol test
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Serve as point of contact for legal staff, clients, the public, courts in multiple jurisdictions, and government agencies
• Supervise BMLS administrative staff members
• Research and analyze legal sources including Band statutes, state and federal law, judicial decisions, law review articles, treaties, constitutions, and uniform codes
• Prepare legal documents, including memoranda of law, interrogatories, motions to produce, complaints, consent orders, and other similar documents as assigned by supervisor and oversight
• Prepare and organize trial exhibits, such as statistical charts and photographic exhibits
• File pleadings within federal, state, and tribal court systems
• Manage cases and files in an easily accessible filing system, including the electronic case management software
• Maintain the judicial calendars of legal staff, with a goal to avoid scheduling conflicts and achieve maximum utility of available resources
• Compile relevant data and prepare reports and presentations for various internal and external auditors
• Act as the law librarian
• Other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Frequent periods of moderate stress levels while keeping up with the workload
• Work is exclusively indoors in a controlled climate area
• Minimal to moderate threat of personal danger or risk. Potential personal contact with individuals with a history of violent and assaultive behavior
• Hours are typically 8:00-5:00, but extra hours may be necessary to meet deadlines and maintain workload. May require some evening or weekend work
