LOCATION: Office of the Solicitor General
REPORTS TO: Managing Attorney/Solicitor General
SALARY RANGE: $60,000 to $90,000

SUMMARY:
The Law Clerk serves as a resource for the OSG attorneys, and is expected to provide general legal support as assigned, more particularly research, drafting, litigation-related assistance and may provide legal advice and advocacy under the supervision of a licensed attorney
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Current student of an American Bar Association approved law school who has finished at least one (1) full academic year, and is not presently on academic probation; or has graduated with a degree of Juris Doctor from an American Bar Association approved law school.
• May currently be a licensed attorney.
• Participation or completion of Indian law coursework preferred.
• Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings, and rudimentary understanding of law; and same with emphasis on Tribal law and governance preferred.
• Ability to interpret and apply substantive law and procedural rules under guidance of a Solicitor.
• Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
• Possess Research and writing skills.
• Computer skills in a Windows environment
• Possess a sincere interest in tribal issues and attaining a high degree of familiarity with Indian legal and court systems is particularly important in this position.
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug & alcohol test
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct extensive research of assigned legal topics
• Provide in-depth analyses of binding and persuasive authorities.
• Prepare memoranda, discovery-related materials, and courtroom documents.
• Draft proposed administrative and judicial orders. • Proofread legal and other documents.
• Adhere to Bluebook citation format when composing or reviewing legal materials.
• Prosecute or defend cases in the Court of Central Jurisdiction or represent the Band in other Courts under the direct supervision of an OSG attorney.
• Proactively provide management or other assigning attorney with updates and progress reports on assignments.
• Perform other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• A potential exists for sustained periods of moderate to high levels of stress from workload and nature of work or interactions with others.
• Work is almost exclusively in doors in a controlled climate area.
• Little threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours are typically 8:00 to 5:00, but additional hours may be necessary to meet deadlines and maintain workload.
• Local travel is required.
