SUMMARY:
The HR Generalist provides technical and administrative support and service in all areas of the personnel functions, mostly dealing with data-entry, recordkeeping, and filing; and some assistance with sensitive matters requiring extreme confidentiality. This includes but not limited to recruitment, selection, benefit, compensation, administration, record keeping, and employee relations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Associate of Arts degree preferred or one year of proven post-secondary education in human resources, business administration or related field required;
OR
• High school diploma or GED and two years’ experience in Human Resources or related function required.
• HR Certificate preferred or ability to acquire a HR Certificate within three years of hire.
• Knowledge of fundamental principles and practices of personnel administration required.
• Ability to perform professional, technical and analytical personnel work.
• Knowledge of federal employment laws.
• Strong computer skills in a windows environment, including Access, Word and Excel.
• Ability to handle highly confidential personal information appropriately.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to multi-task.
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug & alcohol test.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible for the HR database system and data entry of all personnel information.
• Responsible for the data storage information system.
• Acts as the main contact and troubleshoots the HR system, when necessary.
• Assists and conducts new employee orientations, and ensures required documentation and forms are completed for and by all new employees prior to employee information is entered into the HR system.
• Assists the Benefits Coordinator with benefits administration.
• Prepares monthly employee reports using the HR system database and distributes to the appropriate staff.
• Assists with employment verifications and when necessary, wage verifications.
• Prepare data for filing by compiling and sorting information; files paperwork in a timely fashion according to provided guidelines.
• Store information by preparing folders and labels; rearranging materials for space allotment; filing information in designated areas.
• Support the Human Resource staff with composing and typing correspondence, reports and miscellaneous paperwork.
• Coordinate job announcements and advertisements throughout the Mille Lacs Band entities, website, and other organizations.
• Coordinate and monitor the recruitment process, including reviewing job applications, screening applicants for interviews, and scheduling applicants for interviews.
• Review and evaluate applicants’ qualification to determine the selection for interviews.
• Coordinate in making recommendations for the employment of employees/candidates while adhering to the current personnel policy and procedures manual.
• Process and maintain benefits enrollments, both on computer and paper system – done timely and accurately including maintaining the COBRA program.
• Maintain benefit recordkeeping system.
• Coordinate and maintain leaves of absences.
• Participate in administrative staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars.
• May assist employees, manager and department heads with policy concerns and disciplinary actions.
• Assist with other aspects of human resources in the absences of a staff team member, such as front desk receptionist duties, mailroom/travel duties, reporting worker compensation injuries or accidents, setting up drug screens, etc.
• Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that incumbent experiences periods of moderate stress levels due to meeting timelines of workload and dealing with other employees and visitors.
• Work is exclusively indoors in a controlled climate area.
• Little threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours are typically 8-5, but possibly with some extra hours.
• Local travel is minimal.
