SUMMARY:
The Wild Land Technician maintains and improves the Mille Lacs Band’s lands, Department of Natural Resources buildings and trail ways. Assists with wildfire suppression/control and management as a skilled firefighter on an engine or a hand crew. Assists Wild Land Management in other outdoor duties of forestry as it relates to land maintenance and fire management.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Certifications in basic firefighting training such as hand tools, fire weather, fire line behavior, and fire safety required or ability to acquire certificates within 6 months.
• Two (2) years’ experience above the high school level which includes at least 12 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: Forest Management, Outdoor Recreation Management, Carpentry, or Wild Land Fire Science.
• Must have driver’s license Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
Any other special considerations such as:
• Must have a current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a Pre-employment drug & alcohol test.
• List any other specialized requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Harvesting Duties – Distributes information to Band members on harvest and use of resources. Advises Band members in obtaining access to and harvesting resources.
• Disease Control – Assists in disease and insect control to protect resources from severe damage; collects samples to identify the problem and participates in the proper treatment of disease and insect infestations.
• Safety – Participates in fire and safety training, safety sessions, and fire critiques. Ensures the welfare and safety of the team is the number one priority in all aspects of any assignment. Reports spotted smoke, weather and fire behavior.
• Fire Activities – Assists with fire suppression/fire prevention activities which includes working on an engine or hand crew. Assists in controlled burns.
• General Land Maintenance
• Perform tree/shrub planting.
• Assist in timber management.
• Perform road construction.
• Clean and repair existing trails or construct new trails.
• Snowplowing as needed.
• Equipment
• Clean, service, and maintain specialized hand tools and equipment.
• Operate, clean, service, and maintain accessories such as pumps, water lines, tanks, reels, etc.
• Operate, clean, service, maintain and recondition gas and diesel equipment and vehicles.
• Utilize established techniques to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all tools, equipment and vehicles.
• Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Sunday-Saturday, Mainly Daytime, Some Emergency,
 Moderate stress
• Work is Out doors
• List threat, risk or personal danger exposure as moderate.
• Local travel is required
• Travel outside the state is required.
