Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Specialist

SUMMARY:
The WIC Specialist manages and oversees all functions of the WIC program, completes required WIC education and manages required reporting. The WIC Specialist also develops and maintains relationships with clinic sites, community health staff, health care providers, and the general public establishing community support. In addition, this position will participate in daily program operations, including but not limited to: completing participant certifications, providing nutrition education, making appropriate referrals, and issuing benefits for this supplemental nutrition food program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Two years of experience in providing direct services to patients/clients/families preferred.
• Completion of all WIC state requirements upon accepting this position.
• Lactation consultant credentials a preference; or willingness to obtain upon hire.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
• Strong personal computer skills in a Windows environment, including Excel, Word, Publisher, and general office support applications are preferred.
• Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
• Capable of maintaining accurate records.
• Exceptional telephone etiquette and customer service skills.
• Ability to form relationships to provide education and guidance for young family nutrition and well-being.
• Represents the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
• Experience and understanding of the Native American culture and is able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
• Must have current valid driver’s license.
• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, supplemental food issuance and
referrals to health and other social services.
• Educates participants regarding proper nutrition on an ongoing basis.
• Educates and supports participants in breastfeeding - trains on breast pump usage as needed.
• Determines eligibility for services using guidelines provided by State WIC program.
• Weighs and measures pregnant women, infants and children to ensure health status is maintained.
• Distributes supplies and equipment; tracks inventory; ensures maintenance of needed supplies.
• Facilitates referrals and follow-up to other health and community services.
• Creates and maintains files; maintains accurate logs and compiles records of work performed; prepares regular and special reports as required.
• Confers with other agencies, departmental staff and supervisors regarding cases and to coordinate activities.
• Develops and maintains ongoing working relationships with other social services agencies, organizations, and community groups.
• Ensures compliance with all federal, state, local, and department laws, regulations,
and requirements.
• Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the team by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that incumbent experiences infrequent periods of modest stress levels due to workload.
• Work is almost exclusively in doors in a controlled climate area.
• Little threat of personal danger or risk.
• Hours are typically 8-5, but possibility of some extra hours.
• Modest travel may be required, as well as the possibility of some travel to the other districts.
