Chemical Dependency Assessor (2 Positions)

SUMMARY:
The Chemical Dependency Assessor is responsible for providing chemical abuse assessment for the recovery of alcoholics and other chemically dependent persons.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Associates degree in counseling, chemical dependency, social work, psychology or similar field and current valid state certification in CD assessment and treatment is required.
• Minimum of one to three years of experience in CD treatment, counseling, and/or assessment.
• Considerable knowledge of the disease concept and addictions.
• Familiarity with the philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous.
• Working knowledge of applicable assessment and placement criteria rules, regulations, and legislation for Rule 25 placements.
• Knowledge of the resources available inside and outside the Band that can be used in the treatment of alcoholics and other drug users.
• Understanding of non-traditional treatment modalities.
• Familiarity with and sensitivity to culture and tradition of the Mille Lacs Band.
• Commitment to multi-cultural programming.
• Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality with respect to clients to maintain integrity of program.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others.
• Ability to write effectively.
• Basic computer skills, including Windows and Word.
Many chemically dependent people relate better to a counselor that is in recovery and can act as a role model in successful recovery of an addiction. Therefore, while not mandatory that the incumbent be in recovery, consideration will be given to incumbent personal history. If in recovery, a minimum of 1 year of sobriety at time of hire.

• Must be insurable under the Mille Lacs Band Drivers Insurance policy.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide chemical dependency assessments, counseling, treatment, and aftercare planning utilizing a variety of modalities for individuals, families and groups.
• Determine Rule 25 eligibility for clients.
• Maintain appropriate records of treatment and referrals for clients.
• Review patient records and revise plan of action as appropriate.
• Meet with clients, both individually and in groups, and with their families to determine methods to combat reversion tendencies.
• Assist clients as necessary and appropriate while in treatment and recovery.
• Maintain liaison with local agencies and groups whose activities are related to drug abuse programs.
• Provide liaison between CD staff and other HHS professionals.
• Participate in discharge planning for clients.
• Recruit Mille Lacs Band Elders to serve in mentor role for those is outpatient treatment programs.
• Ensure client confidentiality in all matters.
• Transport clients as necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Nature of work is such that incumbent experiences infrequent periods of moderate to high stress levels while dealing with clients, family members, and others.
• Work is almost exclusively in doors in a controlled climate area.
• Little threat of personal danger or risk, although working with certain patients may subject incumbent to periods of moderate to high stress levels.
• Hours are typically 8-5, but possibly with some extra hours. May involve some evening or weekend working and occasionally an 'on call' system covering emergency situations.
• Will involve working with many different people who are often distressed in some way.
Local travel is required, travel outside the state is very limited.
